ServSafe® Certified Food Protection Manager Course

Food Safety Certification Class
Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach is offering a food safety training for food service managers on October 13, 2022 at the Warren County Extension Office in Indianola.
“Certification in ServSafe® meets the Iowa Food Code requirements to have a certified food protection manager in all establishments,” said Cathy Drost, class instructor and ISU Extension and Outreach human sciences specialist in food and health. "We live in a time when food safety hazards and risks are prevalent. Serving safe food is mandatory. This eight-hour program aims to train food service professionals about food safety requirements and best practices to meet them.”
According to Drost, the program is based on the National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe® certification program and the Iowa Food Code. The class is beneficial for foodservice managers from all areas such as schools, restaurants, convenience stores, child care, senior meal sites and health care. Participants will receive a copy of the ServSafe® Manager training manual and will take the ServSafe® certification exam.

Intended audience: Food service managers and employees
Format: One 6-hour course plus certification exam
Certification: Upon successfully passing the exam, certified by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation as a Food Protection Manager

“When we avoid difficult conversations, we trade short term discomfort for long term dysfunction.” - Peter Bromberg We can’t avoid hard conversations. We can, however, learn how to navigate them in a way that brings better outcomes for all parties. In this session, you will learn common errors, like softening the issue and storing up all of your frustrations. Together, we will learn the components of an effective opening statement. You will have the opportunity to create an action plan and develop an opening statement for a difficult conversation you need to have.

Dr. Lisa Hartman has spent her career in education and is driven by supporting others in their learning and growth journeys. Lisa earned her doctorate in leadership at Creighton University. She also obtained her master’s in education from Creighton. Prior to these degrees, Lisa was named the Student of the Year at College of St. Mary, where she earned her master’s of arts in teaching. After brief stints in technical writing and insurance, Lisa recognized that her passion and purpose was in education. She knew the day she stepped foot in a classroom that she would forever have a passion for education. Lisa has taught a variety of subjects to a variety of grade levels, including teaching English to adults. Lisa transitioned into school leadership and during her time as a school administrator, she has overseen every grade level from PK-12.
